Lifestyle changes can help improve the signs and symptoms of heart failure, particularly in its earlier stages.


Often, lifestyle changes will be recommended along with medications. You may be advised to:

  • Stop smoking
  • Control your weight
  • Maintain a heart-healthy diet low in salt, fat and alcohol
  • Reduce stress
  • Monitor and report changes in your weight
  • Track your daily fluid intake
  • Avoid or limit caffeine
  • Monitor your blood pressure
  • Get adequate rest
  • Exercise
