Recovery "Dos"

"Do"

  • Follow all instructions given by your doctor for the post-surgical period.
  • Keep all appointments with your doctor.
  • Call your doctor if you experience any redness or soreness in the area where your pacemaker or ICD was placed.
  • Protect the area around your implant from bumps and hits.
  • Be sure you completely understand the instructions given by your doctor about medications you should or should not take after your implant procedure.
  • If you have had an ICD placed, have a plan to follow in the event of a shock.
  • Be informed about your medical condition and your device so you can talk with family, friends and health care providers about your situation.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Involve friends and family in your recovery by allowing them to help you relax.
  • Resume physical activities when doctor gives you permission, including sexual intercourse.

Be sure to let your doctor know when you experience these emotions:

  • Sadness
  • No longer enjoying activities you once enjoyed
  • Thoughts of suicide or harming yourself
  • Avoiding activities, people, intimacy or other situations that may affect your heart rate
  • Excessive anxiety
  • Fear of receiving a shock from your CRT-D that limits your daily activities
